Catching up with Concord’s METCO Families & Friends

metco-fall-2010.jpg

Concord’s METCO Family Friends program, which matches Boston and Concord families to foster friendships and support, is off to a great start this year. The three elementary schools welcomed 14 new Boston students to kindergarten for the 2010-2011 school year, joining the 71 students in older grades.

In September, Boston and Concord families marched in Concord’s 375 Birthday Parade, with kids taking turns proudly holding the METCO Family Friends Banner as they waved to parade-goers along Main Street. The annual ‘Welcome Back’ picnic was held at the Alcott School in early October. Boston and Concord students shared picnics and enjoyed pony rides, a moon bounce and playing on the playground together. Later in October, Family Friends went apple picking at Shelburne Farms in Stow on a gorgeous fall day. It was especially great to see the kindergarten families, some parents meeting for the first time, picking apples together.

The monthly ‘late bus’ back to Boston – which allows Boston students to stay in Concord for the afternoon on half-day Tuesdays – has also been used by many families for play dates and outings together. The METCO Family Friends Committee is busy planning events for later in the year – a speaker for parents in the winter and other activities for Concord and Boston students to participate in together.
